What's wrong with wearing a business shirt, a tie, a vest on top, with dark jeans?
...to university? My friend said he wouldn't wear it, but I suppose he doesn't go out too much. I've seen plenty of students wear it on a regular basis. Do you see anything wrong with it?

nothing really, people have different styles, some people can pull them off some cant, maybe your friend thinks it looks a little too dressy but then again paired up with jeans it dresses it down a bit.
