The simplicity and extreme talent associated with The Jimi Hendrix Experience trio make their first album, Are You Experienced?, a hallmark in psychedelic music of the 1960s. The opening of “Purple Haze” begins with a dissonant chord alterations, but emerges into a steady beat that lasts throughout the song, with fuzzy distorted guitar solos. Jimi Hendrix’s use of a vibrato arm combined with the long sustaining notes from his fuzz laden guitar produce futuristic and space like vibrating sounds. This extreme vibrato and pitch shifting technique gives Are You Experienced? its unique psychedelic quality, mimicking a drug experience (hence the name, Are You Experienced?) from the use of other worldly songs. The mystical lyricism throughout the album again shows drug related connotations, and references to the nature and wonder of the world. The extreme technical skill that Jimi Hendrix exhibits throughout the album during his solos, and the guitar rhythms, show the emotion that psychedelic music expresses. The culmination of talent shown by all of the member of The Jimi Hendrix Experience reflects sounds of unity and beauty that seem both simple and technical, and this combined with the fuzz guitar of Jimi Hendrix exhibits a psychedelic quality unique to the Jimi Hendrix Experience, that gave influence to future guitarists.
