clay pot candle holders?
My grandmother died and left everything to me. Currently I have about 500 clay / terra cotta flower pots. The smallest I hope to turn into candles or candle holders for tea lights in size. I read online that clay pots baked clay / are porous and must be coated with mod podge or a similar substance inside to prevent the pot to absorb wax and become a fire hazard. I can not buy mod podge within 100 mile of me if I do my own stuff mod podge with 3 parts white glue and 1 part water. My question is will my house batch give the same effect as the branded stuff? I do not want any liability problems if I decide to sell some of them. I could not find a site that coating is even necessary. Has anyone ever done this and can you tell me if the lining is still necessary? Or if it is a coating material cheaper than I can use?
I do not think that is the same ModPodge formula diluted white glue. They have quite a different feel and smell. Have you considered ordering online? JoAnn Fabrics & Crafts (www.joann.com) sold from their website. (Michaels does, I do not think Aaron Brothers is.) JoAnn 40% coupon if you register for their online flyer. This could help us. You can always unsubscribe after some time. You can also ask the paint store or hardware on a sealant for porous pots. They may well have something locally that would work. Do not forget to mention that you plan to use candles.
