what articles of clothing do you get when you buy a dress suit?
I want to buy a suit online and the website doesn't specify but I was wondering what clothing comes when you buy a nice dress suit? Tie, Longsleeve Shirt, Slacks, Shoes? Thanks for any help
K, here's the 10 minute course I've learned via the school of hard knocks over the years. I wish my Daddy had schooled me in all this, so pull up a chair and listen:
Find a reputable men's store to buy your suit. The obvious, buy a quality suit consisting of a pair of slacks, a suit jacket and a good quality long sleeve shirt. A suit is like buying a car, it is not a pair of jeans or khakis. Buy the best you can reasonably afford.
Have the tailor measure the diameter of your neck and the length of your arms, outstretched (write these down and keep em in your wallet for shopping later!). A competent men's store will be able to show you shirts that will fit your dimensions properly. People who just buy shirts “off the rack” encounter problems with the neck being too tight and/or the sleeves being slightly too long or short. You should be able to button all the top buttons on a shirt, put on a tie and be completely comfortable. If you feel constricted on your throat at all, it's not a good fit. Check to see if the shirt needs collar stays; look for little sleeves on the undersides of your shirt collar points. Collar stays are small plastic inserts that keep your shirt collar points looking crisp and defined. Do not skip them.
A good tailor will measure the inseam and outer seam of your pants, the waist size and he will use several pins when setting the position of the pant cuff. He'll be able to make quick, decisive suggestions about the fit and style of your suit without pause, if he knows his trade. Expect to give the tailor 3-5 days for alterations, “day of” work is asking much. Be friendly courteous to a good tailor. Tip him $10-20 after the fitting, not the day you pick up.
Buy a heavy plastic suit bag, and a very broad shouldered hangar to store your suit. That will help keep it from looking bad when you need it again. Take your suit to a competent dry cleaner after each event. Hang it up properly on that wide hangar, and place it in the suit bag. I do not recommend naphthalene nor cedar moth deterrents.
Gold toe socks are the best. Buy a few pairs in a color that match the suit and shoes. If you do not already own dark boxers or briefs with the legs that come part way down your upper thigh, get them now! If you are over ten years old, never again wear tighty whities for any reason. Seriously, throw them all away. And no “tank top” undershirts.
Do not skimp on: shoes, tie and a dress wristwatch. These are key points. A woman will notice a cheap suit, cheap shoes, a bad watch and a bad tie in a second.
Buy a pair of high quality dress shoes that compliment the color of the suit. The leather should match the belt. Spend $5 on cedar shoe inserts, put them in the shoes and store them
in a soft cloth shoe bag. Polish them with paste shoe polish and buff them with a soft bristled shoe brush before wearing, and they will be with you for ages.
Buy at least one good silk tie that complements the suit. Better yet, buy three or more for variety. I always use a tie clip, never a tie tack. Pushing a pin through a tie will shred a silk tie. You can hook the clip on the inside of your shirt, and then the tie will not flop all over. The tie clip should be mid way down your chest. Google a tie knot, and practice until you can competently tie a good looking knot in the mirror without trying too hard. Tying a good tie knot is a serious badge for a man, you want this skill. Having your mom or your girl help you tie your tie is about as emasculating as it can get. The knot is like riding a bike, once you have it, it's always there. The tip of the tie should stop slightly before it reaches your belt buckle. Too long or too short and you look like a goof.
That scraped up old wristwatch you bang around in everyday? Not for a suit, it will stick out like you were wearing sneakers. Spend as much as you can reasonably afford on a high quality watch that makes a classy looking statement and compliments the suit.
Watch, cuff links, tie bar: If your hair & skin coloration is darker, try for gold colors on your metals. If you are fairer skinned / haired, look at silver.
Visit a upscale department store and find the counter where they sell men's fragrances. As the clerk to let you smell several, sprayed on a sample card. If you gag, its out. Use your own judgement, but I go for a subtle statement. I suggest Ralph Lauren Silver or Davidoff Cool Water. Do not marinade in this stuff! Two quick shots on your chest before you put on the shirt is just fine. If a woman is in a conversation or dancing with you, she will notice.
If you don't already have one, find a local hair stylist with talent. Always tip him / her well. See your stylist a day or two before the big event.
