Costume help needed -- sequins, beads or rhinestones? Other suggestions?
My daughter is in The Nutcracker. One part of her costume is a pair of brown and white polka dot suspenders. The suspenders are elastic. Her character is supposed to be very flashy and diva-ish. I wanted to put sequins over the polka dots, but I'm not sure how that would work with the stretchy material. I was going to hot glue them, but I'm afraid they'll pop off when the suspenders get stretched. Is sewing my only alternative? I've never sewn sequins by hand and due to the randomness of these polka dots, that's what I'd have to do. I also thought of sewing sparkly beads onto the polka dots or using rhinestones, but I'd have to use hot glue for the rhinestones. These suspenders need to last for six performances. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated!
For the most flashy effect you have to go sequin. most sequin have a center hole which you will most likly have to sew on with a small sead bead in the center, there are sequin with side holes and you just thread tack them. Kind of like puting up shingles
Hand sewing is going to be your best bet for the time needed(I own a costume shop and in rentals sewn on last longer) do make sure that the suspenders are set for the appropriate size for they will be hard to adjust after the sequins are attached. as for the Rhinstones check out the local craft stores and fabric stores there are rhinstones you can sew on.
If you are puting on many and do not wish to stop tie and knot cut and then start over with each and every sequin, stone or bead try using elastic tread just put a little knot every so many that you sew on ,so that if the tread does break only a few might fall off not every thing.
If you are in a hurry and wish to use glue look for the one that works with sequin and stones "Aleene's Jewel-It" works well hot glue is out to hard to control burnt fingers and melts everthing, watch out for the really strong glues they tend to damage the plastic and dull the shine.
